Position Summary:

  • Joblocation:Edinburg, TX, (UTRGV atEdinburg)

  • Academicposition supported by a research project.

  • Activitiesinclude the conduct of laboratory research in Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) andBSL-3 laboratories with tuberculosis patients or their contacts. It involvesmanaging Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria in the BSL-3 laboratory. Researchactivities include the processing or participant specimens (blood, urine,sputum) and careful documentation of participant information, laboratoryresults and specimens storage inventories using electronic data entry methods.

  • Theresearch laboratory is located in Edinburg, TX. Activities may also include theenrollment of study participants from local clinics.

  • Ability to communicate in English isrequired. Communication in Spanish is ideal but not required.

  • Phlebotomyexperience is ideal but not required.

  • Organizationskills are very important.

  • Flexibilityin working hours is required given that specimen processing depends on thetiming of arrival of specimens from the field.

higher risk of infections like tuberculosis in individuals with diabetes, HIV

or old age.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Conduct laboratory research under the guidanceof the principal investigator. Involves topics on immunology, cell biology andmolecular biology among others. This will involve work with human specimens(e.g. blood, urine, sputum).Laboratorywork in the BSL2 facility, and once acquired sufficient level of training, BSL3work with Mycobacterium tuberculosis as well.

  • Conduct data entry on participant information(interviews, laboratory results) or specimens collected (inventories) tomaintain updated databases and inventories.

  • Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for researchdepartment. Review literature and presents a summary to the research team. Abilityto read and understand the literature that is the basis of the experimentsbeing performed.

  • Enroll study participants at local clinics

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • General knowledge of research fields.


  • Abilityto communicate in Spanish (oral) is ideal (in addition to written and oralEnglish),

  • “People”skills to invite potential study participants and to communicate with theresearch team.

  • Certification for Protection of HumanResearch Subjects and Laboratory Safety training is required and must becomplete within 5 days of employment

  • Basic experience with Microsoft excelor similar for data entry and as platform for experiment design.

  • Phlebotomy experience preferred, butnot required. Training will be provided if needed.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

  • No years of experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds constantly and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

  • This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
