Provides assistance in the performance of a surgical procedure, in one or more specialized surgical areas under the direction of a surgeon. Functions as a member of the clinical team in a supportive role to deliver patient care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable.

Position Key Accountabilities:
Adheres to aseptic techniques as defined by OR guidelines to create and maintain a sterile field.
Prepares surgical field which includes: planning and providing appropriate equipment and supplies, based upon patient and physician’s needs; transferring patient to the OR table and verifying patient identity; positioning patient on the table, performing proper surgical scrub on the correct operative site, draping for maximum exposure to the operative site.
Retracts tissues as directed by the physician to maintain adequate exposure while maintaining patient safety.
Maintenance of surgical site including providing correct sponging, direct pressure and clamping, operating suction equipment, responding appropriately to the needs of the surgeon, providing a safe environment during the perioperative experience.
Incision closure including identifying correct suturing method for area involved, utilizing stapling appropriately and securing drainage devices.
Schedule surgery, hospital procedures and pre- and post-op appointments with patient and hospital.
Manages pre-operative and post-operative patients in coordination with the supervising physician.
Effectively participates in planning and preparing for patient visits ensuring appropriate schedules, test results and clinic specific requirements are available.
As required and competency validated, performs appropriate hearing and vision testing, EKG, spirometry, point of care testing, specimen collection, equipment cleaning/reprocessing and other requested procedures.
Answers patient questions regarding surgery and or procedures as appropriate and designated by physician.
Coordinates with Surgical Reps to assure proper implants/screws/plates etc are available in surgery.
Casting application and removal/Splinting/Bracing in the clinic setting.
Patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include scheduling and organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure room, assist patients with changing to exam gowns, and transfer to exam table if needed.
Assesses patient’s general condition and collect patient history. Documents health history, activities, medication dispensed/prescribed in the medical record and provides patient education materials, communicates physician advice/instructions to patient.
Wound dressing changes, prepare injections, suture and staple removal, sterile tray set-ups, obtain lab/x-ray reports.
Documents MRI, CT scans, labs, referrals into EMR and educate patient regarding these referrals as instructed by physician.
Documents referrals to other physicians and educate patient regarding these referrals as instructed by physician.
Cleans exam rooms.
Stocks and manage par levels in exam rooms.
Takes notes during patient interview, exams and meetings with health care provider. Records the use of interpreters during visits. Enters patient information and other patient records and documents into Allscripts and Care4 programs within institutional time requirements.
Provides written translation of patient histories and other medical reports, patient education and instructional material, advance directives, medical documents and other institutional publications.
May perform responsibilities as a Medical Assistant.*
Performs other duties as assigned.
Current Certification as Surgical Assistant (SA-C) by the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) or the National Surgical Assistant Association(ABSA), provided the exam was administered on or after March 29, 2003; or a current Certification as Surgical First Assist (CSFA) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or has a license recognized by the Texas Medical Board in surgical assisting
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified
*MA Certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA) preferred if performing MA responsibilities
High school diploma
Additional education as necessary, as required by the appropriate certifying body
*Completion of an Approved Medical Assistant Training Program is required if performing MA responsibilities
Three (3) years of experience as a certified surgical assistant or certified surgical first assistant
Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
