UTHealth Houston is looking for an AWS Cloud Administrator to be a part of the Cloud Orchestration team within our Data Center Operations. This Systems Administrator will focus on AWS administration, and should also have a well-rounded background in systems and server support. This team focuses on planning and development of Amazon, Azure, and Google Clouds but this role is strictly focused on AWS services. Support for these systems includes design, implementation, support, troubleshooting, and working closely with application owners, peers, and customers to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting and upgrades.

UTHealth Houston is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. Data Center Operations (DCO) under the direction of the Infrastructure Team at UTHEALTH, operates the university’s primary data centers at UCT, Guhn Rd and in the AWS and Azure clouds. DCO also administers standards for other data centers that are a part of the UTHealth campus. DCO is comprised of five main areas: Infrastructure & Operational Support, Database & Application Support Group, Datacenter & Operational Support, the Cloud team, and the Virtualization team.

Position Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day activities related to system stability, reliability, and security.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Utilizes appropriate procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems and computer system software.2. Installs, maintains, configures, and upgrades UNIX operating systems to improve the reliability, safety and performance of the system.3. Works with Network Security Analyst to ensure security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted. 4. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst.5. Performs basic and intermediate level shell and kernel programming and testing. 6. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.7. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met.8. Implements security and the disaster recovery according to established standards policy and guidelines.9. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements. 10. Implements system software projects.11. Presents technical briefings.12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • AWS Cloud Administration: At least 1 year of AWS Cloud Administration in an enterprise environment, includes deployment of IAAS and SAAS solutions, configuration, security and troubleshooting of specialized systems and applications. Also, a good working knowledge of storage sub-systems as related to system configuration and optimization.

  • AWS Cloud Management: Knowledge of automating management and log analysis using AWS’s tools. Experience troubleshooting break/fix, daily in

  • Certification/Skills:

  • AWSteraction with peers and customers for all things AWS Cloud and participation in on call rotation.

  • Organizational Skills: Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Use of Microsoft Teams and M365 tools such as Planner.

  • Communication and Teamwork: Ability to communicate both written and orally to a wide variety of audiences. Must have the ability to critical thinking skills to solve problems to implement workable solutions. Must be able to resolve all problems existing and newly discovered to move the project towards completion.

  • Must be able to work in both a team environment as well as a self-contributor, in meeting all project related goals.

  • Candidates should have a broad scope of technical capabilities that will enable them to handle all aspects of application management as well as communicate and discuss technical design issues and problem resolution with Application Administrators, other System Administrators, and customers.

  • Customer Service / Collaboration / Transparency: Customer service, collaboration, and transparency which are pillars of Data Center Operations mindset and critical to the success of our mission.

Additional skills that would be a plus for this position:

  • Experience with Scripting in Python and working with JSON/YAML files

  • Knowledge of AWS Services like VPC, EC2, RDS, Lambda and CloudFormation

  • Knowledge of Networking basics: IP addressing, Routing, DNS

  • Experience with managing AWS

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology or related experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

At least One (1) year of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. Preferred experience with the network and server hardware, software and security tools that UTHSC-H has deployed in its information technology infrastructure.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
