Director Coronary Care Unit

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), a leading academic health center, is seeking a cardiologist to run our Coronary Care Unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center. The candidate will join as a full-time faculty at the Associate Professor or Professor level in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at the McGovern Medical School. Our cardiology program is a top-tier program with world-class imaging, interventional, electrophysiology, basic and translational research, and comprehensive adult subspecialty support.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Developing and sustaining an environment in the patient care units that support excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient care outcomes to include excellent risk adjusted outcomes.

  • Ensuring that hospital resources are optimally utilized through participation in strategic planning and financial budgeting processes, and development of practices that achieve specific objectives and resolution of unfavorable performance variances; providing leadership and implementing strategies to provide cost effective quality care.

  • Delegating authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that is consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies and organizational policies and procedures.

  • Identifying patient and family needs of the populations served; recommends and/or developing new programs and services to meet those needs; assuring that age specific equipment, supplies and educational resources are available for assigned units/services

  • Collaborating with UTHealth and hospital administration and physicians to identify future opportunities, and define the direction of department services; developing, and implementing plans to achieve identified goals, efficiency, productivity and patient through put targets across care continuum

  • Developing and implementing unit specific standards, policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services; continuously assesses and improves assigned departments performance while enhancing service

  • Assuring interdisciplinary performance improvement programs are active, maintained and ongoing. Following up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled. Collaborating to maintain a focus on providing excellent clinical services

  • Maintaining professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-services, current literature and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in fields of expertise

  • Serving as role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability and interpersonal skills


Candidate must have an M.D. or equivalent degree and be board certified/eligible in cardiology. Applicants should have experience in advanced inpatient cardiovascular/critical care, research, and teaching, and share our commitment to excellence, integrity, and program development. Candidates may also have experience in Advanced Interventional Cardiology.
