We are looking for a Financial Counselor who will work with our pediatric surgery department in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. This employee upon admission, conducts patient interviews to obtain demographic, financial, and third-party payor information to determine source(s) of payment for services. Works with the self-pay patients in a proactive manner to identify potential benefits eligibility, and assists the patient to complete necessary application documents.
The Financial Counselor is responsible for surgery authorizations as well as getting permission from insurance companies for procedures that occur in the clinic or in a hospital setting. These could be surgical cases or minor procedures. You must be able to verify the insurance and contact patients to relay benefits and responsibilities. You will be joining a team of twenty-five employees with one other authorization specialist working beside you.
The surgical clinic is located in the University of Texas Professional Building. This building is on Fannin and is accessible by Metro's bus and rail services. You will work a standard work week Monday through Friday during 8am-5pm. This role is paid hourly and classified as non-exempt. It is eligible for full benefits including full medical coverage as well as an excellent pension plan administered by the State of Texas.
Position Key Accountabilities:
Obtains and inputs patient demographic information into the patient database.
Screens patient for financial responsibility, taking into consideration all potential benefits eligibility, and assists with completing necessary applications to obtain further benefits.
Conducts a verification of patient information process, including documenting identification, proof of residency, income, and third-party carriers.
Determines the proper pay classification of the patient.
Counsels patients about unpaid bills.
Creates patient folders for appropriate paperwork.
Adheres to internal controls established for the department.
Other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or equivalent; at least one year of college preferred.
Five years of related experience.
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
