Position Summary:

Provides leadership and direction within the Division of Clinical and Educational Support Services in delivering quality service to faculty, students, and staff. Ensures optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. Responsible for monitoring the activity related to exchange carts, processing and sterilization service and inventory control within the department. In addition, supply, and support staff as appropriate. Maintains accountability for department performance and results by reviewing and evaluating department performance reports, usage reports and other fiscal documents for adherence to division goals and directives. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures for inventory control and management of sterile supplies and assists the Director in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Manages the daily work activities of the work unit/department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives.

  2. Plans and organizes day-to-day operations, schedule and activities. Sets priorities and functional standards, giving direction to staff as necessary to ensure the best possible delivery of service and high customer/patient satisfaction.

  3. Implements, monitors and improves tracking of owned & loaned instruments and equipment to facilitate instrument readiness at or above customer required levels. Collaborates to provide instrument readiness at or above required levels.

  4. Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations or other department-specific measures by leading unit projects and/or other department/system directed activities.

  5. Supports change initiatives, maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment; adjusts effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures.

  6. Proactively evaluates processes; recommends and implements action plan(s) for change. Participates in the development and implementation of new procedures and the review and revision of existing procedures.

  7. Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations; supports entity-specific performance improvement and data management/analysis functions. Adopts lean principles in driving process improvements.

  8. Audits completion of instrument availability as a quality control metric.

  9. Assists in the development of department budget and ensures that the department operates in a cost-effective manner. Manages/audits department expenses within approved budget parameters.

  10. Oversees the periodic/annual inventory, managing inventory levels and records and reviews inventory level recommendations from Assistants. Utilizes instrument tracking system to effectively manage the flow of work, evaluate employees, and track inventory data. Adds and modifies items as needed and prints barcodes while ensuring no duplicates are created.

  11. Provides incident and historical analysis of equipment damage and loss to reduce equipment repair and replacement expenses. Collaborates with customers and vendors to improve instrument availability without increasing instrument expense.

  12. Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and/or revises the Sterile Processing department safety plan and/or any specific accreditation/regulatory required safety guidelines.

  13. Assures that staff performs all duties in compliance with departmental and University policy.

  14. Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) – or other industry standard equivalent. Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) preferred.

Ability to effectively communicate with patients, faculty, staff, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.

Effective Knowledge of basic computer software use.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree or experience in lieu of degree.

Minimum Experience:

Four years of progressively responsible sterile supply and processing, inventory experience or experience within an applicable field.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
