Position Summary:

Under limited supervision of a licensed dentist, performs preventative dental treatment and conducts oral hygiene care educational programs for the prevention and control of dental disease in accordance with state guidelines and regulations, for a community-based dental clinic.

POSITION KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Cleans patient’s teeth which includes scaling and polishing, and takes radiographs as instructed by the dentist.

  2. Provides preventative dental treatment such as application of drugs, pit, and fissure sealant to the surface tissues and exposed surface of human teeth, and marginates amalgam restorations to smooth the filling borders.

  3. Advises patients on proper home care for the treatment of teeth and gums. Counsels patients on proper nutrition after reviewing a log of what the patient eats for a 3-5 day period in order to promote dental and gingival health.

  4. Provides a dental hygiene perspective of the patient for the resident dentist to enhance the total dental care treatment.

  5. Maintains records of patients seen, procedures performed, and the materials used to ensure accurate and current record keeping.

  6. Schedules patient appointments, confirms appointments the day before the appointment, enters patient information into the computer, maintains the journal to track patients due for prophylactics each month, and sends patients reminder postcards to schedule appointments.

  7. Maintains patient relations by writing thank you notes for referrals, and providing dental information.

  8. Coordinates, plans, and presents educational programs to school students to ensure greater comprehension of proper dental practices. Determines timing, place, presentation materials, and hand-outs. Presents instructions and conducts demonstrations with models in the proper methods of brushing teeth and gums.

  9. Sets up and restocks the cubicle work area.

  10. Updates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) annually in order to respond to emergency situations.

  11. Responds to emergency situations.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Departmental Duties

  1. Performs preventive and therapeutic procedures including prophylaxis, polishing, scaling and root planing; conducts patient screenings, obtain medical history, vital signs, charting and takes radiographs as instructed by the dentist.

  2. Provides preventative dental treatment such as application of drugs, pit and fissure sealants to the surface of teeth, and marginates amalgam restorations to smooth the filling borders.

  3. Advises patients on proper home care for the treatment of teeth and gums. Provides nutritional, preventative and self-care counseling to promote dental and gingival health.

  4. Provides a dental hygiene perspective of the patient for the resident or attending dentist to enhance the total dental care treatment. Records dental treatment plans as developed by the dentist.

  5. Maintains records of patients seen, procedures performed, and the materials used to ensure accurate and current record keeping in EPR while adhering to HIPAA and OSHA policies and regulations.

  6. Actively maintains a recall system for patients due for prophylaxis to ensure patient retention.

  7. Maintains patient relations by promptly addressing patient inquiries, providing dental information at discharge and solicit patient feedback to improve services.

  8. Coordinates, plans, and presents educational programs to patients, students and/or residents to ensure greater comprehension of proper dental practices. Determines timing, place, presentation materials, and hand-outs in coordination with the dentist. Presents instructions and conducts demonstrations with models in the proper methods of brushing teeth and gums.

  9. Sets up and restocks the work area. Insures adequate supply levels for conduct of hygiene.

  10. Maintain annual certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) annually in order to respond to emergency situations.

  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

Licensed to practice dental hygiene by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an approved dental hygiene training program.
