The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is hiring a Research Assistant to support the UTHealth Trauma and Resilience Center . Lead by Dr. Elizabeth Newlin, the Trauma and Resilience Center Clinic offers evidence-based, trauma-focused care for children and adolescents struggling with complex trauma and trauma-related behavioral health conditions. The team of expert clinicians and staff are dedicated to helping children and adolescents overcome trauma and build resiliency in a compassionate, family centered environment.

Position Summary:

Under close direction of senior research staff, conducts activities to support research projects.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Under close supervision, conducts research activities according to research protocol. Research activities may include some or all of the following: patient recruiting and screening, traditional laboratory experiments and activities, informatics, field interviewer recruiting, screening and training and/or animal laboratories.

  2. May maintain clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

  3. Collects, evaluates, and interprets research data to provide needed information to principal investigators and other researchers. Updates notebooks, records, and databases as needed.

  4. Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for research department.

  5. Orders laboratory and/or other supplies as directed by senior research staff.

  6. As needed, may coordinate the work of laboratory technicians and assistants to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results.

  7. Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Developing and maintaining a book of standard operating procedures for the TRC Laboratory.

  2. Providing information to recruited families, communicating policies and procedures, and responding to all inquiries.

  3. Administering questionnaires to school age children and their caregivers as well as adult participants.

  4. Guiding and advising families through each study phase. Acting as a resource to participants, addressing any concerns.

  5. Troubleshooting resolution of any issues that may arise throughout the study.

  6. Conduct literature searches and assistance with manuscript preparations.

  7. Participating in regular meetings with PI and other relevant study personnel.

  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Willingness to learn or competence in data management softwaresuch as REDCap or Qualtrics

  • Experience in data management, including creating databases, scoring relevanttests, data entry, verification, & analysis

  • High attention to detail, with a focus on absolute accuracy inscoring and data entry as well as in transcribing data.

  • Well-developed organizational skills and ability to multi-taskas well as analytical skills to organize and interpret data of moderatecomplexity.

  • Well-developed communication skills to provide information toparticipants, work collaboratively on a team, deal with conflicting views, andmediate solutions.

  • Sensitivity in working with multicultural populations and youngchildren.

Certification/Skills:

  • General knowledge of research fields.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

  • No years of experience.

Additional Information:

  • Position Type: Full-Time / Salaried / Non-Exempt

  • Pay Range: $27,000 - $33,000/year based on years of paid experience

  • Location: Texas Medical Center - Behavioral and Biomedical Services @ 1941 East Road, Houston

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds constantly and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
