Position Summary:

The position will support experienced lab personal in conducting basic research aimed at understanding how lipid-protein interactions govern membrane protein structure and function. The position provides an opportunity to enhance existing biochemical and molecular biology expertise and to expands one’s abilities in the area of biophysical and structural studies of membrane protein. No work with animals is required at this time. Conducts and executes complex scientific experiments and research endeavors and interprets the results.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The applicant must have a working knowledge and demonstrated ability in the following areas:

Molecular genetic manipulation, growth and cloning techniques used for Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Escherichia coli and plasmids

Protein analysis by native and SDS-PAGE and Western blot, DNA analysis by Agarose gel electrophoresis

Protein and DNA gel electrophoresis.

Protein purification and column chromatography experience are desirable.

Use of basic Microsoft spread sheet, word and PowerPoint programs.

Use of Adobe graphics programs desirable.

Background in general techniques used in biochemical and molecular biology (centrifugation, buffer preparation, growth media preparation, sterile techniques

Use of low energy radioactive material (32P, 35S, 14C and 3H) will be required. Training will be provided if necessary

  1. Plans and implements research experiments according to research protocol.

  2. Makes independent decisions as required, which may impact research team or assigned project.

  3. Maintains accurate and timely records which may include notebooks, records, databases, etc. as needed by the research project.

  4. Assists with identifying type and quality of supplies needed for research project to ensure cost effectiveness and ensure smooth operations.

  5. May monitor laboratory and/or other supplies to ensure sufficient inventory to support research projects.

  6. May maintain clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

  7. Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for research department. Participates in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.

  8. May provide guidance and training of laboratory technicians, field interviewers, research subjects, support staff and/or other assistants to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results.

  9. May provide updates to P.I. regarding research progress.

  10. Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes.

  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Advanced knowledge of concepts of research field assigned.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field of science or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

Two (2) years of related experience in a research or clinical lab environment.

May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
