Position Summary:

Under close direction of senior research staff, conducts activities to support research projects.

Department: Neurology - Multiple Sclerosis

Under direction of the principal investigators, candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks for a project investigating the pathogenic effect of antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus on cells of the nervous system. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Conducts research activities, under general direction, according to research protocols. Research activities will include all of the following: processing blood for plasma, affinity purification of antibodies, measuring concentration of IgG, ELISA, and Western blots.

  2. Responsible for maintaining cells in tissue culture, performing in vitro assays of cell function, and immunohistochemistry.

  3. Works with rats and/or mice.

  4. Maintains adequate level of lab supplies to assure timely achievement of lab activities.

  5. Maintains accurate and timely records to include notebooks, records, databases, etc. as needed by the research project.

  6. Monitors laboratory and/or other supplies to ensure sufficient inventory to support research projects. Ensures quality of reagents or other supplies.

  7. Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for research department

  8. As needed, coordinates the work of laboratory technicians, support staff and other assistants to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results. Answers questions or resolves problems regarding routine or more complex duties.

  9. Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes

  10. May participate in continuing education programs, workshops and seminars.

  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

The majority of the work will be done during regular business hours on weekdays, but there will be some tasks on weekends and evenings


General knowledge of research fields.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

No years of experience.

II level requires:

Bachelor’s degree or relevant

experience in lieu of education.

One year of related

experience in a research or clinical lab environment.

May substitute required

experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education


Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds constantly and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
