Position Summary:

UTHealth is looking for a Sr. Systems Administrator to be a part of the Cloud Services Support team within DCO. This team focuses on clinical, enterprise, and departmental level cloud application systems design, implementation, and support. Primary responsibilities are focused on AWS and will include architecting cloud storage, server and database administration services and support, systems integration, business intelligence, as well as working closely with the application owners to assist with performance tuning and troubleshooting.

You should be proficient in the following skillsets:

  • Experience with the core AWS services

  • Experience in Automating, Configuring and deploying instances on AWS environments, also experience with EC2, Cloud watch, Cloud Formation and managing security groups on AWS.

  • Proficiency in at least one language from our stack: JavaScript, Python

  • Demonstrated experience with security best practices in AWS.

  • Previous experience with large-scale systems design in a cloud environment

  • Ability to troubleshoot distributed systems.

  • Knowledge of writing infrastructure as code (IaC) using CloudFormation or Terraform.

  • Experience with building or maintaining AWS cloud-native applications.

  • Experience with the serverless approaches using AWS Lambda is a plus. For example, the Serverless Application Model (AWS SAM).

  • AWS certifications are a plus

This position will work in our University Center Tower location, and it is a full time exempt role. It is eligible for full benefits including low cost healthcare options and an incredible pension offered by the State of Texas. The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. Data Center Operations (DCO), at UTHEALTH, operates the university’s primary data centers at UCT and Guhn Rd. DCO also administers standards for other data centers that are a part of the UTHealth campus. DCO is comprised of three main areas: Infrastructure & Virtualization, Database & Application Support, and Datacenter & Operational Support.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Responsible for all procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems and computer system software.

  2. Responsible for all activities related to system administration.

  3. Assigns personnel to various projects, directs their activities, and evaluates their work.

  4. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, configuration, security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software.

  5. Implements operating system enhancements that will improve the reliability, safety and performance of the system.

  6. Performs programming and testing.

  7. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.

  8. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the computer system.

  9. Determines and implements security and performance improvement activities.

  10. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements.

  11. Implements system software projects.

  12. Plans and supervises training of systems administrator personnel.

  13. Presents technical briefings.

  14. Participates in formulation and implementation of installation standards and procedures.

  15. Attends professional conferences and acts in place of supervisor as needed.

  16. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • UTHealth is looking for a System Administrator with a focus in systems and server support primarily in a Amazon Web Services (AWS).

  • Experience with the core AWS services

  • Good background in Linux/Unix and Windows administration.

  • Proficiency in at least one language from our stack and familiarity with the others: JavaScript, Python, PowerShell.

  • Strong notions of security best practices and practical implementation experience

  • Experience with monitoring solutions such as CloudWatch and the ELK stack.

  • Previous exposure to large-scale systems design.

  • Ability to troubleshoot distributed systems.

  • Knowledge of writing infrastructure as Code (IaC) using CloudFormation[HJAE1] [GL2] .

  • Experience with building or maintaining cloud-native applications.

  • Familiar with the serverless approaches using AWS Lambda is a plus. For example, the Serverless Application Model (AWS SAM).

  • AWS certifications are a plus.

Technical Qualifications would include:


Managing Cloud Environments: initiating and standing up cloud resources such storage, compute resources, security services and log file integration with native cloud tools and managing those services throughout the lifecycle of that environment.

Organizational Skills: Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project and Microsoft Planner.

Communication and Teamwork: Ability to communicate both written and orally to a wide variety of audiences. Must have the ability to think logically in solving problems, as well as implement workable solutions. Must be able to resolve all problems existing and newly discovered to move projects towards completion.

Must be able to work in a team environment as well as a self-contributor, in meeting all project related goals.

Candidates should have a broad scope of technical capabilities that will enable them to handle all aspects of application management as well as communicate and discuss technical design issues and problem resolution with Application and System Administrators.


Multiple Cloud Service Experience: Aside from AWS, Microsoft Azure experience is considered a plus. Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is a nice to have.

Container Administration: Docker and supporting tools.

Scripting/Programming Technologies: PowerShell, .NET, Java, AWS Cloud Formation, Python

Knowledge of monitoring tools: Such as Splunk, SolarWinds, Cloud Watch etc.

Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and computer operating systems. Familiar with WEB technology, database concepts and networking.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology or related experience in lieu of education

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
