Position Summary:

Manages the activities within the Datacenter Operations area along with system administrators and technical specialists in support of one or more application/technical support areas of moderate to high complexity and scope.

This is a full time position that will report to an office in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. It is eligible for all benefits from UTHealth including healthcare options and a pension administered by the State of Texas. The position is classified as exempt.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Practice Plan’s IT datacenter infrastructure, ensuring maximum uptime and stability.

  2. Supervises team leadership and coordination of both large and small projects, tasks, and initiatives ensuring accurate and timely resource allocation and project staffing.

  3. Provides customer relationship management by defining customer needs and coordinating those needs with team plans.

  4. Develops/reviews and implements plans, service level agreements, controls, procedures, etc. that ensure the stability of the production applications according to service levels agreed upon with customer.

  5. Provides for performance monitoring of applications and hardware within the datacenters through the use of specialized monitoring tools.

  6. Prepares/reviews and submits project plans and progress reports establishing policies and management controls to stay within the planned budget and timelines as well as project status.

  7. Provides/reviews applications development work-plans, evaluation of multiple design alternatives and testing.

  8. Manages the development, maintenance and operation of a 24x7 server and datacenter environment for mission critical applications in accordance with industry standards, policies and procedures.

  9. Provides/reviews systems design analysis, risk evaluation and project requirements clarification.

  10. Introduces new technologies, solutions, and alternatives to support changing business and operational needs.

  11. Participates in long- and short-range plans and budgets for projects and ongoing operations. Participates in the IT annual maintenance and capital budget process. Establishes schedules, sets priorities, allocates resources and monitors progress for projects and ongoing operations.

  12. Manages information technology contracts.

  13. Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

• Excellent technical and general communication skills, both oral and written including specific skills such as presentation skills, leading/participating in group sessions, and the ability to communicate complex subjects.

• Certifications in relevant areas such as Microsoft, Novell, Unix, hardware certifications, and associated technologies are preferred.

• Certifications or training in Project management and other management disciplines preferred.

• Requires demonstrated skills in large project planning and control, data center operations and design, server operating systems, basic network protocols, network architecture and design, storage system design, application administration and information technology security. Must also possess excellent communications and customer service skills, as well as technical and management experience in running a complex environment.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business, related discipline or related experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

Six (6) years of relevant experience with managing system administrators and datacenter operations including operating systems and/or hardware.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
