Position Summary:

Provides professional editorial skills in the preparation and release of basic to complex news items, articles, publications, and other print and digital pieces. Promotes and strengthens the UTHealth brand through editorial consistency and cohesive storytelling.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Prepares publications:

• Performs complex editing tasks checking for grammar, style, and content.

• Adheres to and champions UTHealth brand, editorial and graphic standards.

• Edits copy of other editorial staff.

• Serves as primary fact checker.

• Reviews publication drafts with sources for accuracy and completeness as needed.

• Follows each client’s review process.

• Writes headlines, cutlines and other content to support print and digital stories, publications and other pieces.

• Coordinates photographs and other visuals with direction as needed.

  1. Builds and develops contacts and relationships with university faculty, staff and students.

  2. Shares content with internal audiences.

  3. Posts content to university websites.

  4. May work with outside vendors such as freelance writers, photographers and publishers and write bid specifications and evaluates bids.

  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Excellent editing skills, including grammar, spelling, AP Style and UTHealth editorial and graphic standards.

Ability to write and edit on deadline for print, web, social media and video scripting/production.

Excellent verbal communication skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Adobe Creative Suite.

Knowledge of project management systems.

Ability to edit, post and update content in Content Management System.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism or related experience

Minimum Experience:

Five years of experience in writing and editing for publication. Preferred medical news or health sciences experience.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
